Improved export demand lifted orthodox leaf tea at Kochi auctions, which witnessed a higher sales percentage.
In sale 17, the demand was strong with a 95 per cent sales out of the offered quantities of 2,04,739 kg, registering a ₹1 increase in average price realisation at ₹193 against ₹192 in the previous week. According to traders, many overseas buyers have shown interest in increased purchase after Easter holidays coupled with a surge in internal buying.
The auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said that whole leaf and medium whole leaf witnessed strong features and appreciated in value. Brokens and medium brokens were firm and sometimes dearer. Exporters to Middle East and CIS countries were active with upcountry buyers lending fair support.

In CTC leaf, best CTC brokens was dearer, while mediums and plainer brokens becoming irregular. The offered quantity was 26,500 kg with a sales percentage of 89.
However, CTC dust market was lower with good liquoring teas barely remained steady and was lower, witnessing some withdrawal. The quantity offered was 7,00,891 kg registering 91 per cent sales. All blenders together absorbed 60 per cent of the total CTC quantity sold. There was improved enquiries from loose tea traders and upcountry buyers. The average price realisation was down by ₹2 at ₹157 compared to ₹159 in the previous week.
Orthodox dust market was steady to firm and sometimes dearer, especially blacker one. The offered quantity was 20,000 kg with a 100 per cent sales and exporters were the main stakeholders.
